Many seasons of below-average rainfall across much of Tasmania have created a serious situation for our farmers. Landholders are increasingly facing the results of climactic conditions on a grander scale – fire, flood and drought.
All of these conditions have one thing in common – they reduce access to feed and fodder, which in turn causes distress and hardship to the farming community.
TasFarmers Market aims to facilitate access to feed and fodder in good times and in bad times.
While this website was conceived as our response to the current dry conditions, we also recognise that there is a strong need for an on-going facility to connect buyers and sellers. We need to keep the momentum going. This is a long-term project.
This won’t be the last time that we find ourselves at the mercy of Mother Nature in Tasmania. We have been experiencing El Nino events with increasing regularity since the early 90s.
We need to look at what we can do as a state to prepare for the next tough season. We can’t control the weather, but we can still mitigate its effects.
For example, over the longer term, the TasFarmers will also look at improving future access to fodder across industries and partnerships to potentially provide emergency fodder sources. Further inroads could also be made into other issues, like establishing optimum pasture growth, irrigation, improved storage and transport.

What should fodder purchasers be aware of/ watchful for when buying intrastate (between municipalities / properties)?
Fodder purchasers should exercise good farm biosecurity and hygiene practices when purchasing fodder within the State. Where possible, purchase from a reputable source who you know to produce a quality product free of weed seeds, pests, diseases and other contaminants.
Biosecurity procedures that fodder sellers should put in place?
Suppliers or sellers of fodder in Tasmania should exercise good farm biosecurity and hygiene, just as recommended for purchasers of fodder.
Insist upon and check that only clean vehicles enter your property, and confine visiting vehicles and people to certain areas where possible to minimise the risk of spread of invasive pests, diseases and weeds.
Loading fodder for transport over hard stand surfaces can also minimise risk of spread of some invasives. Monitor fodder storage and distribution areas for signs of new weeds or other pests. Seek advice from Biosecurity Tasmania if you suspect a new pest has established.
What weeds should I be looking for?

Accessing Fodder in Emergency Situations
Both ‘emergency’ and ’disaster’ are commonly used to describe any event that endangers, injures, damages and/or destroys life, property and the environment, and which requires a significant and coordinated response from one or more emergency management organisations, for example police, ambulance or fire brigade.
What is the best way to help feed livestock and animals in emergency-affected communities?
In general, the best way for any member of the public to help after any emergency is to donate money or vouchers for the purchase of goods and services supplied by businesses in the affected community. This not only allows people to identify and meet their most pressing needs, it also helps to stimulate recovery in the local economy.
In Tasmania, Rotary leads the coordination of community-based activities for the collection of publically donated fodder and feed (and donations of money to purchase fodder and feed) for the appropriate distribution to animals on emergency-affected properties.
