Kudos for backpacker tax decision

27 September 2016

The Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) has congratulated the Federal Government on its announcement that it will reduce the rate of the proposed backpacker tax from 32.5 per cent to 19 per cent.

“This is a common sense approach which will ensure that Australia remains competitive at an international level,’’ TFGA CEO Peter Skillern said.

The TFGA, along with other stakeholders, has long and actively advocated for this kind of result.

“We participated in the recent delegation to Canberra to ensure that the views of Tasmanian farmers were heard on a national stage,’’ Mr Skillern said.

“The reality is that Tasmanian agriculture needs backpackers and, following today’s announcement, our farmers can be assured that they will have the workforce that they need.”
