12 October 2020

The Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association has welcomed the release of the independent review into the Conditional Exemption to import potatoes from South Australia. The reports three recommendations have been accepted by the Department and will be implemented along with additional requirements including a review of the Import Risk Assessment for the importation of potatoes, this will be coupled with a review of the audit and verification program.

The TFGA strongly commends the initiative to make public on a quarterly basis information on all permits issued and refused under the Plant Quarantine Act, this is a clear step in improving communication between Biosecurity Tasmania and the various sectors. This initiative will be further enhanced by the commitment to undertake industry consultation where there may be significant impacts on a industry sector if a permits is to be issued.
